Inclusion B’Kavod (Inclusion with respect) has been a fundamental mission and value at Ohev Shalom for over a decade. There has been much progress in its mission to honor, acknowledge, include, and engage those with various abilities and interests in all programming and life events. The Belonging Initiative emerged to acknowledge and engage those in our Ohev Shalom community who may be looking for a cultural or secular “home,” but who may not be observant.

The vision of The Belonging Initiative is to create a space where individuals in our community: observant or not, members or not, can come together to build a sense of community and solidarity. We aim to break down barriers that may have existed, offering a warm welcome to those who may feel disconnected, and providing them with opportunities to engage in meaningful dialogue and experiences.

The Initiative is rooted in the idea that every member of our community can participate in a way that they feel seen, heard, and valued.

Key Aspirations of the Initiative

A designated space where newcomers, those on the fringes, and others who may feel distanced from the community, can engage without fear of judgment.
Opportunities for individuals to meet others in the community, build relationships, and find their own place within a supportive environment.
Social events, group activities, and volunteer opportunities to allow individuals to participate and contribute.

Having launched a survey and formed a committee, the Initiative is hard at work planning activities and events to engage people who haven’t felt they’ve had a place to connect.
