The youth groups at Ohev Shalom provide an opportunity to socialize and experience life Jewishly. One of our main goals is to provide a social atmosphere for the Jewish youth in our area. Throughout the years, the youth groups of Ohev Shalom have continued to grow and achieve recognition on a regional level. Our youth activities are made possible through the combined efforts of a program director, advisors, students and parents. With the combined help of everyone, we hope to provide many wonderful experiences for Jewish young people.

The programs that we offer are grouped by school grade:

Our Youth Department is affiliated with the Department of Youth Activities of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. Our sister chapters on all levels can be found throughout the Delaware Valley, as well as across the United States and Canada. The youth group presents numerous opportunities for informal Jewish education. Many individuals team best in an informal environment. Through discussions, movies, guest speakers, drama, cooking, arts and crafts. community service, and shared Jewish experiences, many of our young people have been motivated to enhance and increase their Jewish education, identity and involvement.

What is an Ohev Shalom Youth Group?

  • It is a distinctively Jewish group composed exclusively of Jewish youth as its primary purpose is to serve as a place where Jewish youth can meet.

  • It is an organization / club that regardless of its religious orientation, is dedicated to the perpetuation of the Jewish people.

  • It is a well organized group which is supervised by qualified professionals who work together with lay leadership and the parents of the members.

  • It is a group which has well planned ongoing activities that reflect the varied interests of the membership.

  • It is a group which reflects and adheres to the standards, philosophy and objectives of its local/national parent organization.

  • It is dedicated to developing the leadership potential of each member.

  • It is a group that fosters comradeship and encourages its members to work together for a common purpose.

  • It is a program that effectively supplements the individual's Jewish education and develops his/her understanding and appreciation for Jewish history, traditions and the State of Israel.

  • It is, regardless of religious orientation, committed to the endurance of the Jewish values of G'milut Chasadim - acts of loving kindness - and Tzorchai Tzibur -recognition of the individual's responsibility to the community.

  • It is the kind of program about which parents and the community feel confident; will have a positive influence on our young people; is molding the future leaders of the Jewish community; and is helping to ensure the continuity of our community and our heritage.

Kadima, 5th through 7th grades

What

Our Kadima group has been one of the Delaware Valley Region’s selection as the “Chapter of the Year” for many years. We are very proud of this fact as well as our growing numbers. Kadima members participate in two events per month. We are very active in the Chapter as well as in the Regional activities, so we can have the benefit of meeting other fifth, sixth, and seventh graders. The schedule is very exciting and includes social activities, sports, holiday celebrations, arts and crafts, in addition to a Regional Shabbat experience.

Sample

Activities

Rafting down the Delaware, Sukkot Luncheon, Regional Shabbaton, Mystery Bus Ride, Theater Day, Chanukah Show and Dinner, Ice Skating, Disney on Ice, Game Night, Regional joint events with other Kadima Chapters, Regional closing trip, Chapter closing trip to an amusement park.

Where

While many of our events will be held in the synagogue, we will also be traveling to many places where “fun” can be found. Some of our chapter events, as well as Regional events, will be held in other synagogues. It is a real plus for our children to make connections with children across the Delaware Valley.
