Ohev Shalom College Connection

College Connection was revitalized nearly two years ago to provide outreach from the synagogue to our college/graduate/professional students. We periodically have a presence in the print and online Dove Tale and weekly brochure.

We invite families and students to register college students so that we may keep in touch with them during these transitional years. We have sent small gift items periodically over the past two years: Jewish datebooks, Starbucks Gift Cards, Dried Nuts and Fruit (TuB'shvat), kosher for Passover candy bars, draydels and gelt, etc. We also send emails a few times a year, particularly when a synagogue event may be relevant to them. Last summer we had an August gathering which the rabbi attended. About a dozen high school students and college students participated.

In May, we had a Lag B'Omer (almost) barbeque again attended by about a dozen high school and college students. We have about 70 students on our list and recognize that many have not yet been recruited (likely 200-300 families have college students). We have done nicely with contributions and have been able to fund our activities without using general congregational money.

Several parents have helped get out mailings and helped with our two live events.

Aside from opportunities to meet during our annual gatherings, we hope to provide a directory of college students willing to be a resource for high school juniors and seniors involved in the college search process. Any suggestions for our committee from you, senior staff/clergy and the Board are welcome.
