Our Rabbi and Cantor

Rabbi Eliott N. Perlstein

Rabbi Perlstein is a native Philadelphian. He grew up in Oxford Circle and graduated from Northeast High School in 1971. After two years at the Joint Program of Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary, Rabbi Perlstein graduated from Temple University and later received a Master of Arts in Religion from Temple. In 1982 he was ordained by the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. After serving as the synagogues student Rabbi, he assumed the position of Rabbi of the congregation.

In the following years, Rabbi Perlstein took a leadership role in interfaith relations in the North and Southampton Communities. He also exemplified a commitment to Israel as well as to Soviet Jewry, visiting the Soviet Union on two occasions to meet with Refuseniks and to teach.

In the early nineties Rabbi Perlstein entered a Doctor of Ministry Program in Pastoral Care and Counseling at the Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion. He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Ministry in June 1995.

In March 2001, the congregation honored the Rabbi at a gala dinner dance celebrating his 25 years of service to the synagogue as well as the 25th anniversary of the congregation.

Rabbi Perlstein is married to Janie and is the step-father of Jordana, Elana and Samara Jaffe. They live in Ivyland, a neighboring town to Richboro.

Cantor Paul Frimark

Cantor Paul Frimark assumed the pulpit at Ohev Shalom in September 1996. He has become an integral part of all aspects of our synagogue community through his interaction with the pre-school, Hebrew school, and B’nai Mitzvah. He joins our adult choir and also conducts the youth chorale. Nearly every family in the Ohev community interacts with Cantor on a regular basis.

Born and raised in the Philadelphia area he studied as a young member of Congregation Temple Sinai with Hazzan Nathan Chaitovsky. He continued his Judaic studies at Gratz High School while attending Central High School in Philadelphia and Temple University, where he earned his B.B.A. in accounting. After a long career serving the Jewish community musically and as a controller for twenty five years, a desire to assume the pulpit led to a new vocation, with a life dedicated to the religious and musical aspects of Judaism. Cantor Frimark returned to Gratz College where he received his Graduate Certification in Jewish music and his Master of Arts in Jewish Music in May 2005.
